Orange Is the New Black, Season 3 in Books

Season 3 of Orange is the New Black has officially been binge-watched and I think I noticed more books in this season than the previous two.

It's a shame BooksOfOITNB.tumblr.comhttp://booksofoitnb.tumblr.com/
didn't post for Season 3 but no fear because duh, Buzzfeed exists to fill all of our internet voids.

Episode 1 started off with a Harry Potter reference, which was wonderful. I knew I was going to be on board with Season 3 the second I heard the name "Cedric Diggory".

And this scene, with Big Boo and Pennsatucky was so, so good. And not just for the Freaknomics breakdown:

I'm going to pretend no books were burned in this season and just leave it at that. Because it was just too heartbreaking.

And the whole dynamic that took over when Suzanne started writing her own book was pretty interesting to watch unfold. I love how literary this show is.

You can see the rest of the list of books referenced in Season 3 of OITNB over on Buzzfeed.

And here's a bit on the books referenced in Seasons 1 & 2

The Casual Vacancy, on HBO

We don't have television. I mean, we have a television but we don't get television. Which means we pretty much only watch what is on Netflix and HBO.

So I'm a little surprised I completely missed that J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy has been adapted into a miniseries for HBO. The trailer looks pretty great. Of course, it is HBO, which I have never really been disappointed by.

Plus, DUMBLEDORE is in it so... I'm sold.

Paste magazine did a short interview with director Jonny Campbell, which you can read here.

I'm feeling drawn to reread the book before watching the miniseries, but at the same time, it might be refreshing to watch without constantly thinking about what was different in the book. Apparently, I never actually wrote a post about it, except this short thing.

Isn't it a strange feeling to be intrigued by your former self? I have no idea why it weighed so heavily on me and now I'm so curious!

Will you watch The Casual Vacancy?

An Orange is the New Black Reading List

I just binged my way through the second season of Orange Is the New Black, and I have to say, I loved it so much more than season one. Amazing.

In case you aren't already following the Books of Orange is the New Black blog, this would be a great time to start.

The blog is filled with screenshots from the show of characters with their latest reads, full reading lists from both seasons and some great questions from fellow fans.

Have you guys read This is Where I Leave You? I love it. And although book adaptations aren't always the best, I am SO excited about this movie.

Plus the tagline of this magical page is "Because Piper Chapman is the new Rory Gilmore"... sort of, not really but whatevs!

Just want the reading lists? Season 1 // Season 2

Breaking Bad reimagined as a Penguin Classic

I'm a serious Breaking Bad addict, bitch. So I obviously very much love this:

I found this on Tumblr (Thank you, Aaron) but after much Googling, still couldn't figure out the creator. If you know who made this beautiful thing, comment and let me know!

ps. this is how I feel when artists don't get the credit they deserve:

Ron Swanson vs Dr. Seuss

I am a huge Parks and Rec fan. In fact, I'm going as one of the show's characters for Halloween and am insanely excited about it. So of course I love this design by Tom Trager that is a beautiful mash-up of my favorite Ron Swanson-ism and a Dr. Seuss book cover.

I think I've already sent about 10 of my friends a link to the design but I kind of needed to share it here as well. If you'd like, you can buy it as a t-shirt.

Actual children's books I love

WE HAVE TO GO BACK

I think I'm still going through LOST withdrawls. Everytime I see anything related to the series, I get way too excited about it and every so often, I'll hold up my hand to a window and whisper "not Penny's boat".

Anywayyy, check out this book cover concept from Sean Hartter for a LOST choose your own adventure book.

Looove it.

Books VS Television

My brother and I are pretty different. When we were younger, we'd both get in trouble for not playing outside, but I'd be locked in my room with a book and he'd be planted in front of the television for hours.

Now there are quite a few television shows that I really enjoy, but at the same time so many that make me question the general level of intelligence of Americans. For example, Planet Earth is awesome, Wipeout makes me concerned for the future of our country. It seems like if you want to watch a program that makes you think, whether it is a documentary, drama or comedy, you need to have access to cable channels. The general channels seem to host a majority of the shows that are overall, just plain stupid.

I thought these quotes on the relationship between books and television were pretty dead-on:

"The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television." —Andrew Ross

"I find television to be very educating.  Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book." —Groucho Marx

"If you read a lot of books, you're considered well-read.  But if you watch a lot of TV, you're not considered well-viewed."  —Lily Tomlin
