Library stories

So my post this week with that F. Scott Fitzgerald quote really started something over on the To Be Shelved Tumblr. People started submitting their quirky stories from working at libraries and some of them are pretty excellent. You can read all the stories by CLICKING HERE. I hope people keep sending them in. There are some pretty great reads so far.

PS. Everybody loves libraries (& more)

Summer Reading

David Sedaris has always been a part of my summer. I was first introduced to his writing while on family vacation one summer when we visited a local bookstore and I decided to venture away from YA novels and buy "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". Truth be told, I probably wasn't old enough for it at the time, but that collection seems to have become a summer staple for me. One year, my best friend even dropped my copy in Lake Michigan and it somehow survived.

I few weeks ago I asked my Tumblr followers if they had any go-to books in the summer, or any specific author they seemed to fall into reading each year. I thought it was interesting what answers were duplicated and similar to my own (ahem, Harry Potter), and also that there were books and authors I had never even heard of. I put together a mini round-up that includes most everyone's answers. Hopefully everyone will discover something they've never read before or rediscover an old favorite.

Click through the jump for the full list, including the contributors. Thanks to everyone for your input, I loved seeing your answers and getting a little inspiration for my own summer reading list.

1 Week!

Tomorrow marks my first week at my new job. I couldn't be happier... BUT I have been neglecting To Be Shelved and I feel a little guilty about it.

I've been giving myself some time to get used to my new routine and 40+ hr/wk job, but once I'm set, I'm going to get my blogging act back together. Until then, I have been making some quick posts over on the To Be Shelved Tumblr. If you'd like to follow along, CLICK HERE.

I am so excited about some interviews and reviews and fun design posts coming-up though. Don't give up on me, internet!

Lisa

I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons when I was younger, so catching an episode or two became a great rebellious feat. I never got super into the show, but I can appreciate it. And when I found The Lisa Simpson Book Club, I thought it was pretty cool.

The site includes screen grabs of Lisa reading, as well as book lists and quotes from the show.

Women Reading

Apparently there is a Tumblr blog dedicated to pictures of women reading. That's it. Seriously.

3 Must-Reads

I received a question on the To Be Shelved Tumblr today about my 3 must-reads and thought I'd post my answers here as well.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it, but every time I find something new that I love.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan If you’re even remotely interested in food, the human body, cooking/eating, the earth, or if you are a human… it is a must read. You will never look at corn or hunting the same way again.

The Show I’ll Never Forget: 50 Writers Relive Their Most Memorable Concertgoing Experience Really excellent stories. I knew I had to buy it when I read the story about The White Stripes in the bookstore and started crying.
