Rabbit Arrival

So, I finally stopped searching and purchased a copy of "Rabbit Is Rich" .

In case you weren't paying attention, John Updike's Rabbit Angstrom has become one of my favorite literary characters and seeing is character develop from "Rabbit, Run" to "Rabbit Redux" was really rewarding. Since finishing "Redux", I have spent countless hours searching for the perfect copy of "Rabbit Is Rich".

No surprise, I found it on Amazon.

Okay, the jacket is less than stellar, but it is the hardcover, Alfred A. Knopf copy I've been searching for.

Jim Tierney's First Penguins

Alright, so this post might cause my blog to verge on being Jim Tierney's fan base, but he just posted his first Penguin works and they are pretty classy. From the sound of his own blog, none of them are official yet but I would buy them if I saw them on stands.

For example, look at this lovely piece of work for "This Is Just Exactly Like You", a novel by Drew Perry.

You can view the rest of his first Penguin covers by CLICKING HERE, and to read my other posts on Jim, CLICK HERE.

Fodor's "A Men's Guide To Europe"

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I discovered a pretty great Fodor's guide the last time I was at Grounds For Thought. I've actually noticed a couple different versions of this before, but the cover and illustrations included in the copy I found this week were extra special. And, The Men's Guide To Europe is just as fun to read as it is to look at.

I mean, look at those lovely green and yellow stripes on the end pages. And these great little illustrations:

I love travel guides and am so happy to have this as part of my collection.

Recent Finds

I brought home some pretty great finds from the bookstore this week. First, The Flag Book by Preben Kannik which is really just page after page of the flags of nations in the early 1960s.

Also, The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It. A really amazing find, even if it didn't have this great cover and these end pages:

I've decided the Fodor's The Men's Guide To Europe I found deserves it's own post, so check back for that shortly.

In the meantime, has anyone else made some great vintage discoveries lately?

75 New Popular Penguins

To celebrate 75 years of being awesome, Penguin Books will be releasing 75 new titles under their Popular Penguins series. On June 28, the new titles will be available, in store, for only $9.95.

You can also CLICK HERE to download a spreadsheet of both the new and old Popular titles, or watch the video below featuring the new titles.

And now I'm pretty excited for June 28. Whenever I find a Penguin in this style I bring it home to place on my bookshelf. I just love how all those orange spines look next to each other. I'm sure with these new releases, my shelves will be getting significantly oranger in the not-so-distant future.

Three Bags Full (A Review)

It should come as no surprise the reason I first picked up Leonie Swann's international bestseller Three Bags Full was its cover. The reason I chose to bring the book home from the store and read my first sheep detective story was the fact that it was, well, a sheep detective story.

The novel follows a herd of sheep who have recently lost their shepherd, George, as they try to uncover the mystery of his death and find a way to carry on with their sheep lives. Although the book is a bit slow at first, Swann's writing is witty and clever, creating an enjoyable read the whole way through.

A core group of about five sheep lead the investigation, each endearing characters with their own quirks and detective tricks. My favorite character was Mopple the Whale, a large sheep who loves to eat and is known for his perfect memory.

Since the story is told through the eyes of the herd, humans and human life are seen in an unusual light. A lot of the time I found myself laughing while reading came from the sheep's examination of the daily life of humans and how unusual our behavior might seem to animals. In the same way, having the story told from the herd's perspective offered many humorous pieces of a sheep's life.

One of my favorite parts of reading Three Bags Full was that it also doubled as a flip book. In the bottom right corner of each page was a small sheep who jumped as you flipped the pages.

Overall, Swann's first novel was a fun read and perfect for summer. The connection between the sheep and their lost shepherd was touching, while their detective journey was funny and adventurous.

Really Awful Book-To-Film Adaptations (A Paste List)

One of my favorite magazines, Paste, releases a new list everyday of something pop-culture-esque. Today's list was "Nine Book-to-Film Adaptations That Shouldn't Have Happened". I can only speak for the books I have read and movies I have seen on this list, but I do agree with it overall.

I've mentioned before how much the cover switch for The Lovely Bones bothered me. Movie poster design and book cover design are not the same and I think it always turns out tacky when the book cover is changed to reflect the movie.

The Lovely Bones made it onto Paste's list as well. Here's what they had to say:
There’s plenty of Peter Jackson’s wonderful visuals in this adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel, but the movie’s stripped-down story lacks most of the novel’s emotional weight, and throws in some totally unnecessary thriller-flick elements to boot.

Other highlights of this little list include Matilda, The Golden Compass and The Cat In the Hat

I do own Matilda on DVD and love it dearly, but it of course does not come close to Roald Dahl's book which was one of my favorites growing up.
